His entrepreneurial journey began with Zip2, a web software company he co-founded in 1996. The company provided business directories and maps for newspapers. Compaq acquired Zip2 in 1999, providing Musk with his first significant financial success.


Elon Musk then turned his attention to the financial sector, founding X.com, an online payment company, in 1999. X.com went through a series of mergers and transformations and eventually became PayPal in 2001. PayPal became a leading online payment platform, and in 2002, eBay acquired it for $1.5 billion, further solidifying Musk's financial standing.


Musk's fascination with space exploration led him to establish SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.) in 2002.
